& ur welcome.

fuck it. be a mess.

Dear world,

I hate February 14th.

Remember when it seemed like everyone cared about ending school shootings and gun violence? All those silly posts and trends on social media made it seem like we were making good headway.

‘#Neveragain.’

Wow! That was a good one.

‘#Neveragain.’

I must say, it really felt like we were making progress when everyone and their cousin were using this hashtag. Well, you know, until it happened again... and again... and again... and many times after that. Suddenly everyone has forgotten, and people have become numb to the reality that children in America walk into school with the prospect of being murdered. But thank God for the Second Amendment, am I right?

Four years have gone by, and my community and I are still living with the pain, the trauma, and the heartbreak. We remember and it doesn’t get better, but at least it doesn’t get worse. Wait, I’m going to retract that prior sentence. It does get worse.

With every mass shooting. With every gunshot murder. With every loud noise. With every crowded place. I remember. And little by little I slip, knowing that nothing will change until I welcome this as my norm.

*WARNING HEAVY SARCASM AHEAD*

But please, continue to make your traumatic movies, plays, and video games about shootings. I’m sure it’s doing a lot more to bring about awareness and empathy rather than what’s happening in real life. In all honesty, who needs the news?

*END OF SARCASTIC PARAGRAPH*

Listen, I hate February 14th or “Valentine’s Day,” and not because I’m an old hag who lives with eight cats and hates love. No, I love ‘love,’ but it just so happens that February 14th is not only the day of love, but February 14th is also the day of death. Four years ago, Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida experienced a school shooting. Four years ago, 17 beautiful lives were lost, and more were to follow.

As for my final thoughts, God bless America, the home of the free and the brave to do whatever the fuck they want... as long as it doesn’t involve smoking marijuana, of course.

Sincerely,

A traumatized student and a member of the Parkland community
